Valheim Troubleshooting Guide: Crashes, Performance and Server Issues

Valheim is an action-adventure survival game built around exploration, construction, and a vast procedurally generated world. The release of version 1.0 brought the game out of Early Access, but technical issues can still occur after updates, when using mods, while connecting to servers, or because of specific hardware and software configurations.

In this guide, we've collected the main solutions to common Valheim problems, including crashes, freezes, low FPS, startup errors, corrupted saves, server issues, mod problems, controller issues, and other technical difficulties.

The first thing you should do when experiencing problems with Valheim is check the system requirements. Following the release of version 1.0, they differ significantly from those of the game's earlier builds.

If the game stopped launching immediately after installing a major update, start by verifying the integrity of the game files.

In Steam, follow these steps:

Steam will check the installed data again and automatically download any corrupted or missing files.

If the problem appeared specifically after the Valheim 1.0 update, temporarily disable all mods. Valheim does not officially support mods, so older versions of BepInEx and individual plugins may be incompatible with the current build after a major update.

If the game closes immediately after launching, try the following steps one by one:

If the problem started after installing a mod, don't immediately reinstall the entire game. Remove the mods and their loaders first, as they are often the cause of errors after major patches.

If crashes occur after loading into a world, pay attention to when and where they happen.

For random crashes, check:

If the game consistently crashes in the same location, the cause may be a corrupted world object, a mod, or an issue with the current game version.

When using an older world, also keep in mind that version 1.0 content is generated primarily in areas that haven't been explored before. The developers allow players to continue using old saves, but recommend starting a new playthrough for the most consistent generation of new content.

The first time you load a large or long-running world after an update, the process may take longer than usual.

If Windows shows the game as Not Responding, don't close it immediately. Give it some time and check whether the process is still using CPU or disk resources.

If the world still won't load:

If other worlds load normally, the problem is most likely tied to that specific save.

Valheim automatically creates save backups, so you no longer need to manually work with .old files the way players did in earlier versions of the game.

On the world or character selection screen, open Manage Saves. This menu displays available local and cloud saves along with their backups.

If the latest save is corrupted, select an earlier working version and restore it.

Before experimenting with backups, we also recommend copying the Valheim folder to a safe location.

On Windows, the game's save data is usually located at:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

On a dedicated server, the save directory can be changed with the -savedir parameter.

If your character or world disappears from the list after an update or after moving to another computer, open Manage Saves first.

Check whether the save is stored in a different category, either local or cloud.

The issue can also be caused by a Steam Cloud conflict. Don't replace files manually until you've confirmed which version of the save is the most recent.

If necessary, create a backup of:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

and only then restore an earlier save.

Valheim can place a significant load on your system around large settlements with many building pieces, light sources, and heavily modified terrain.

Version 1.0 introduced additional optimizations, including reduced stuttering when loading world areas and faster saving, but the developers note that enormous bases can still have a noticeable impact on performance.

If your FPS is too low, start by reducing:

You can also close background applications and disable the Steam, Discord, NVIDIA App, and other overlays if they cause problems on your particular system.

If your FPS is high while exploring but drops sharply when you approach a settlement, the problem may be the number of active objects.

Huge bases, large numbers of light sources, fires, smoke effects, animals, and complex structures can have a particularly strong impact on performance.

In this situation, lowering the resolution alone may make little difference. Try reducing shadow quality and Draw Distance, and consider removing some of the most performance-heavy objects from your base.

Short stutters can occur when the game loads new areas of the world. Version 1.0 further optimized how zones are loaded into and unloaded from memory, but small delays may still occur on some hardware configurations.

If the stuttering is particularly noticeable:

Memory usage may increase after major updates because of new assets, mods, or particularly long play sessions.

The developers recommend 16 GB of RAM for Valheim 1.0.

If your system begins relying heavily on the page file and performance suffers, close unnecessary applications before launching the game. If you use mods, also test the game without them, as some plugins can significantly increase memory consumption.

If you get a black screen after starting the game but Valheim continues running, try the following:

If your PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure Valheim is using the more powerful GPU.

Purple textures usually indicate that the game failed to load the required graphical assets or shaders.

Restart Valheim first. If the problem persists, verify the integrity of the game files.

If you're using mods, launch a clean version of Valheim. After major updates, outdated mods may try to access game assets that have been changed or removed.

If UI elements start flickering, switch from fullscreen to windowed mode and then back again.

UI mods are particularly prone to breaking after major game updates.

Valheim does not officially support mods. As a result, older versions of BepInEx and individual mods may stop working or cause crashes after the release of version 1.0.

If the problem appeared after updating:

This makes it much easier to identify the incompatible plugin.

Important: The developers do not guarantee mod compatibility with Valheim 1.0.

Don't repeatedly load an important save with outdated mods enabled. If a mod added custom items, structures, or world changes, running the save without a compatible version of that mod may potentially cause those objects to disappear.

Back up your saves before testing compatibility.

No. Older worlds remain supported, and you can continue using existing characters and saves.

However, newly generated content is primarily added to areas that haven't previously been explored.

The developers therefore recommend starting a new playthrough after upgrading to Valheim 1.0 if you want the most complete and consistent world generation with all of the new content.

This is particularly important for the Deep North, which became a fully developed final biome with version 1.0.

If you travel to the Deep North in an older world but can't find the new locations, enemies, or other version 1.0 content, the area may have already been explored before the update.

New content is primarily generated in previously unvisited areas.

If a large part of the Deep North has already been uncovered in your old save, creating a new world is the most reliable solution.

In the Steam version, the console must be manually enabled by default.

To do this:

After loading into a world, press F5.

To access most cheat commands in single-player, enter:

devcommands

Entering the command again disables developer mode.

On Xbox, the console is enabled by default.

If nothing happens when you press F5, first make sure your Steam launch options contain:

-console

You should also launch the game through the same client where you added the launch option.

On laptops, the F1-F12 keys may require the Fn key, so try pressing Fn+F5.

If that doesn't help, temporarily try launching Valheim as an administrator.

The old imacheater command found in early Valheim guides is no longer used to enable cheats.

The current command is:

devcommands

After entering it, you can use the available developer commands.

If the server you need doesn't appear in the browser, the easiest option is to connect using a Join Code or IP address.

When crossplay is enabled, the host can open the pause menu and share the Join Code with other players. The code can then be entered through:

Join Game → Add server

This is particularly convenient when players are using different platforms.

Valheim 1.0 supports full crossplay between the available platforms.

PC and console players can join the same server as long as the server is running with crossplay enabled.

Dedicated servers use the following parameter:

-crossplay

When using the PlayFab crossplay backend, router port forwarding is generally not required.

Make sure the server is running with crossplay support enabled.

For a dedicated server, use:

-crossplay

Also make sure every player has the latest version of Valheim installed.

If the server is using the standard Steam backend without -crossplay, only Steam users can connect to it.

If you receive a version mismatch message when connecting, the client and server are running different Valheim builds.

Update both the game and the dedicated server.

After patches, the dedicated server application may need to be updated separately through Steam or SteamCMD. Once the update is complete, fully restart the server.

Steam has a separate Valheim Dedicated Server application.

Before launching it, check the following file:

start_headless_server.bat

This file contains the server name, world, password, and other settings.

By default, the server uses ports 2456 and 2457.

If you're using the standard Steam backend, make sure the required ports are forwarded through your router and allowed through your firewall.

When using the -crossplay parameter, port forwarding is generally not required.

Don't close the server window using the X button.

To shut down a dedicated server safely, the developers recommend using:

Ctrl+C

This allows the application to shut down properly and save the world data.

By default, a dedicated server saves the world every 1800 seconds, or once every 30 minutes.

You can change this using:

-saveinterval 1800

The server also supports automatic backups.

The number of backups kept is controlled with:

-backups

You can also change the intervals for short-term and long-term backups using the -backupshort and -backuplong parameters.

If doors, chests, or workbenches respond with a long delay or don't work at all, check the server connection first.

Restart both the server and the client, and make sure:

If the problem affects only one player, the cause is most likely on that player's connection or client.

Network lag is different from a regular FPS drop. If the image remains smooth but enemies and players move in sudden jumps and interactions with objects are delayed, the problem is network-related.

Check:

If the server is physically far away from most players, latency may remain high even with a fast Internet connection.

If the game doesn't detect your controller, disconnect it and reconnect it first.

Then:

If the problem appeared after installing a UI or controller-related mod, temporarily disable it.

Reset your custom control settings and reconnect the controller.

If you're using Steam Input, try both enabling and disabling it for Valheim. The better option depends on the specific controller.

Also make sure there aren't multiple physical or virtual controllers connected to the system at the same time, as they may conflict with one another.

First, make sure the issue only occurs in Valheim.

Check:

If you changed the output device while the game was running, restart Valheim completely.

You should also temporarily disable virtual surround sound software and other applications that interfere with audio processing.

If Valheim won't download through Steam, the problem is usually related to the client, the download server, or your Internet connection rather than the game itself.

Try:

Download speeds may also temporarily decrease after major updates because of heavy load on content distribution servers.

Check that you have enough free disk space and that the drive is functioning properly.

If the download finishes but Steam reports a disk write error, restart both Steam and your PC, then check the Steam Library folder.

Also make sure your security software isn't preventing the game from creating or modifying files.

Unity errors can have many different causes, so there is no single universal solution.

Start with the following:

If the clean version of the game works correctly, restore your mods gradually until you identify the one causing the problem.

Colored lines, dots, geometric shapes, and other graphical artifacts may indicate a problem with your GPU, graphics driver, or unstable overclock.

Check your GPU temperature and return the graphics card to its default clock speeds.

If the same artifacts appear in other games, the problem is most likely not specific to Valheim.

Valheim automatically saves the world at regular intervals and when you exit properly.

If your changes keep disappearing, check:

For important worlds, periodically create separate backups through Manage Saves.

Yes. Updating to version 1.0 does not delete old worlds or characters.

However, achievement statistics only begin tracking after version 1.0 is installed. Some world modifiers and cheat commands can affect your ability to unlock certain achievements.

Items created with cheats are also marked accordingly by the game.

Make sure you're meeting the achievement requirements after updating to Valheim 1.0.

Statistics for the new achievement system only began tracking with version 1.0, so some actions performed years ago in an older world may need to be repeated.

Also keep in mind that some world modifiers can block certain achievements. This includes Hammer Mode.
