The Elder Scrolls 6: Release Date, Platforms and Everything We Know About Sentinel
The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel is the next numbered entry in the series from Bethesda Game Studios after Skyrim, and officially there isn't much information about it yet. Here's everything confirmed as of November 2026 about the name, setting and engine, as well as what's still unannounced: the release date and platforms. We separate developer statements from insider reports, because there are far more rumors around the game than facts.
The Elder Scrolls 6 release date
There is no official release date, year or release window. On November 3, 2026, Bethesda Game Studios said that development continues and that it will be some time before the studio is ready to share more.
Every other timeline comes from somewhere other than the company:
- Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier wrote on Bluesky on November 3 that the game is still more than two years away, and added that he knows the time frame the game is targeting. He named no year.
- Windows Central's Jez Corden and content creator JuiceHead, according to GamesRadar on November 4, point to 2029, with JuiceHead noting that his information predates Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's arrival. Bethesda has not confirmed this.
- Phil Spencer, then head of Xbox, told a court in June 2023 that the game was "five-plus years away," and journalists derived 2028 from those words.
- IGN's Ryan McCaffrey wrote in a November 4 column that the 2028 timeline is largely guesswork and could easily end up being 2029, though he doesn't rule out a fall 2028 launch either.
The most careful statement today sounds like this: the game will ship no earlier than late 2028, if Schreier's reporting is accurate, and possibly later — Bethesda itself has never named a date. Why the wait has taken this long is a separate, bigger topic we won't get into here.
What platforms it's coming to
Platforms are also officially unannounced, and Bethesda said nothing about them on November 3. Here's what is known:
- In November 2021, Spencer told GQ he wanted to offer the "full complete package" on Xbox, including Elder Scrolls VI, and in 2023 in court said that given how far out the release is, it's hard to say which platforms the game will end up on.
- In August 2026, asked directly by the BBC about exclusivity, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma answered only "It's a beautiful game," while noting more broadly that every platform needs exclusives in some form and that Xbox will keep making them if the business stays healthy.
- Todd Howard has said it is too early to discuss platforms, according to Kotaku, in comments made in July 2026.
A PC and Xbox release looks logical, since Bethesda belongs to Microsoft, but even that isn't confirmed. PS5 is no clearer either: Starfield reached it on April 7, 2026, and Sharma named Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as console exclusives in that same August interview. The theory that the game is being held back for Microsoft's next console, Project Helix, remains speculation — on October 21, Wccftech laid it out in detail while calling it speculation itself.
Where it's set
Bethesda says it has revealed the name and setting. Sentinel is a city and former kingdom in Hammerfell, a province in western Tamriel southwest of Skyrim, and the quote in the reveal video names Iradne as Hammerfell's High Queen. The city sits on the Iliac Bay, with the Alik'r Desert to its south.
Hammerfell is home to the Redguards, a people descended from the sunken continent of Yokuda. Skyrim players know them from the In My Time of Need quest involving Saadia at the Bannered Mare. Bethesda hasn't specified the map's borders, but theories that the 2018 teaser showed neighboring High Rock now look much weaker.
What's known about the story
The only official text about the story is the quote from the name-reveal video, credited to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne: "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate."
The line is dated 4E 206, while Skyrim begins in 4E 201 — five years separate the quote from the start of Skyrim. That doesn't mean the game itself opens in 206; when it takes place hasn't been announced. Moth Priests are the people in this world who read Elder Scrolls, and Kotaku, citing The Verge, reported on October 29 that the game would touch on the history of the Scrolls, though Bethesda hasn't confirmed that either. The studio hasn't revealed a protagonist, storylines or factions.
Engine, gameplay and system requirements
The game runs on Creation Engine 3. Howard discussed this in February 2026: the studio spent several years developing Creation Engine 2 from Starfield into a third version, with changes to rendering, world systems and loading. A studio update from July 17 confirmed that Fallout 5 is also being built on the same engine.
No gameplay has ever been shown publicly. Howard says only that, after Fallout 76 and Starfield, the studio is returning to its classic style, and the Xbox CEO praised the scale and story after a live playthrough in August 2026. System requirements haven't been published, so any specs tables circulating online are invented.
What trailers have been shown so far
Only two videos of the game exist so far, and neither has gameplay. The first teaser, 36 seconds long, premiered at E3 in June 2018, when the game was still in pre-production. The second, the name-reveal video, came out on November 3, 2026, for Bethesda's 40th anniversary.
What stage development is at
Bethesda announced early development in August 2023, and in July 2026 said the game remains the studio's main project, that most of the team is working on it, and that work is on schedule. At the same time, Xbox layoffs hit the studio in July 2026, and staff told IGN they fear delays, though no postponement has been announced, and Bethesda, according to Vice, told a YouTuber the game's roadmap is unaffected.
Eurogamer names The Game Awards on December 10 as the next likely showcase window, though that's only the outlet's guess and Bethesda has promised nothing. We track news about the game on its game page, and while we wait, there's our list of games like Skyrim to check out.
