In Gothic 1 Remake, two-handed weapons deal massive damage, but they require proper progression and training from the right teachers. Without the skill, the hero will swing heavy blades slowly and awkwardly, leaving himself open to counterattacks. In this guide, we explain how to level two-handed weapon proficiency, where to find teachers, which factions unlock training, and where to get a good two-hander early in the walkthrough.
How Two-Handed Weapons Work
Two-handed swords, axes, and hammers in the remake have high damage and a wide attack range. However, this weapon type has two key features.
- Long attack animations. Every swing takes time. If you miss, the enemy may have enough time to strike back.
- Wide attack range. Side swings are good for controlling groups of enemies, such as lurkers or wolves, but in narrow mines, your weapon can hit a wall.
How to Level Two-Handed Weapons
The main mistake beginners make is spending all Learning Points only on Strength. In Gothic 1 Remake, weapon proficiency is just as important as attributes: training changes animations, speeds up attacks, and unlocks more convenient attack chains. Because of that, you should plan your Learning Point spending in advance.
Step 1: Basic One-Handed Weapon Proficiency
You cannot build a full two-handed weapon character right away. First, the hero has to survive the early game with one-handed weapons, while access to two-handed combat teachers opens later and depends on the faction you choose.
- Save up Learning Points and level One-Handed Weapons at least to Apprentice. This changes the hero's animations and unlocks basic combos;
- Raise Strength with Diego to around 30-40 points so you can feel comfortable in Chapter 1 and equip decent one-handed swords.
Step 2: Switching to Two-Handed Weapons After Joining a Faction
After joining one of the main factions, check whether you have access to a two-handed combat teacher in your camp. In the Old Camp, this is handled by Thorus; in the New Camp, by Lee; and in the Swamp Camp, by Cor Angar.
The Apprentice level is the key stage for a two-handed weapon build. The hero stops holding the sword like a club, attacks become faster, and the first attack chains make fights against single enemies and small groups noticeably easier.
The Master level further speeds up recovery after attacks and unlocks long combo chains with powerful finishing strikes. At this stage, two-handed weapons fully come into their own and let you keep distance more confidently against orcs, lizardmen, and other dangerous enemies.
A trained hero with moderate Strength is often more effective than an untrained character with a higher Strength value. Learn weapon proficiency first, then add Strength to meet the requirements of a specific sword or axe.
Where to Find Two-Handed Weapon Teachers
Unlike basic one-handed combat, two-handed weapons are usually taught only after joining a faction. Because of that, your camp choice directly affects which mentor you can reach.
Thorus
Thorus can be found in the Old Camp, near the entrance to the inner castle. To receive two-handed weapon training from him, you need to officially join the Old Camp and become a guard.
Lee
Lee is located in the New Camp, deep inside the residential cave. To learn two-handed weapons from him, you need to officially become a mercenary.
Cor Angar
Cor Angar is the Swamp Camp mentor. You can find him at the training ground. There are several teachers in the camp, but Gor Na Toth handles attributes, while Cor Angar teaches combat skills. To train with Cor Angar, you need to officially become a Templar.
Combat Tactics and Combos
Using a two-hander in the Remake is entirely about timing and reading enemy animations.
- Do not button-mash enemies: spamming one attack button with a two-hander often ends in death. The game punishes chaotic inputs with long animations;
- Use animation canceling to control your weapon. At Apprentice level and higher, you can interrupt a failed swing by dodging backward or to the side. This is especially useful against fast monsters, such as snappers;
- The main advantage of a two-hander is that you can hit an enemy before it reaches you. Start your swing slightly before the enemy enters your attack range, and you will control distance much better.
When fighting with two-handed weapons, it is important to consider the traits of different enemy types and adjust your tactics to the situation. If you encounter groups of small enemies, such as goblins or wolves, use wide side swings to hit several targets at once.
Against armored targets like guards, lizardmen, and skeletons, you should act more carefully. Two-handed axes and heavy blades break through defenses well, but blunt weapons are more effective against skeletons, including heavy hammers.
Where to Find Two-Handed Weapons Early in the Game
Proper two-handed blades require serious Strength values and usually become available closer to Chapters 2-3. However, you can get several options earlier if you know where to look.
The first option is orc weapons. While exploring remote corners of the map or the Orc Cemetery, you can find rusty or trophy two-handed weapons. They have high Strength requirements and awkward animations, but in the early game, that kind of damage can be very useful.
The second option is stashes, blacksmiths, and NPC weapons. Some strong two-handed swords can be found in dangerous places or forged yourself after training with blacksmiths, such as Darrion in the Swamp Camp or Huno in the Old Camp. You can also obtain weapons from certain NPCs, but this method is risky: fighting important characters or guards can ruin your walkthrough, so make a separate save before any experiments.
The main principle of playing with two-handed weapons is simple: keep your distance, do not save Learning Points when it comes to teachers, and do not rush your attacks. A two-handed sword in the Colony does not forgive chaotic swings, but with the right progression and careful play, it lets you deal confidently with strong enemies and groups of opponents.
