Universal Modder Gives Claude Code a Workflow for Creating and Testing PC Game Mods

Arkadiy Andrienko

Universal Modder is a Claude Code plugin that can identify a PC game's engine, inspect its code, create a mod, generate assets, and test the result in the running game. Its GitHub repository lays out a workflow that starts with investigating a game and choosing a modding method, then moves through building, testing, recording, and packaging a finished mod.

The process includes backing up save files, reading the game's code, building a working slice of the mod, and checking it in-game. Universal Modder uses fal tools to generate sprites, transparent textures, 3D models, sound effects, music, voice, and video. Asset generation requires a fal API key.

Plugin allows creating mods for any games

An example for Terraria adds a homing missile launcher, a tactical nuclear bomb, three new enemies, and a two-phase boss called the Drone Mothership. The project's listed requirements also include Python 3.10 or later and ffmpeg.

In a separate Age of Empires II example, the mod adds a new civilization, a Robotaxi unit, Delivery Drones, and a Transamerica Pyramid wonder. The unit models were made by converting images into 3D.

Universal Modder is intended for games the user owns and plays offline in single-player. It refuses to inject into online games protected by anti-cheat, create multiplayer cheats, or bypass anti-cheat, DRM, or ownership checks. The project is published under the MIT license.

How useful could automated mod creation be when the tool is limited to owned, offline single-player games and refuses to bypass protections?
