In real time
The type of games known as "real-time" does not allow players to hit "pause" and think about their next moves. Such games require maximum attention from the player and the ability to make quick decisions. In single-player games, there is still the option to hit "pause," but at that moment the screen is covered by a menu. Sometimes there are variations of real-time games where the player can queue a series of commands for their character or units and buildings, which partially simplifies the task.
