YouTube channel Realistic GameZ has released an 8-minute video comparing the three most recent mainline entries in the Borderlands series: Borderlands 2, Borderlands 3, and Borderlands 4.

The video showcases a side-by-side comparison of movement mechanics, foliage, shadows, explosions, water, fire, textures, lighting, draw distance, and more. According to the video, the fourth installment represents a significant leap forward in nearly every aspect, largely thanks to its use of Unreal Engine 5.

Borderlands 4 launched on September 12th for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It's scheduled to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 hybrid console on October 3rd. The standard edition retails for $70. The game enjoyed a strong launch on Steam, breaking the series' record for peak concurrent players with 288,000. However, it has faced criticism for poor optimization, crashes, and various bugs on the PC version. Previously, the PC version was tested on 33 different NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics cards, including the Arc A770, Arc B580, RX 7600 XT, RX 9070, RTX 3060, RTX 4060, RTX 4090, and even the RTX 5090. Prior to that, it was revealed what kind of framerates the game achieves on older NVIDIA cards like the GTX 970, GT 1030, GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1650, and GTX 1660.

In related news, a recent update was released for the PC version of Borderlands 4 that improves optimization. Just before that, an interactive map of the game world surfaced, pinpointing the locations of fast travel stations, points of interest, vending machines, collectibles, legendary weapons, chests, quests, bosses, and much more.
