GTA 6 is less than a month away. Preloading opens on November 12, and the game launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Before launch night, a few things are worth sorting out: how much storage to clear, when the download starts, what time the game unlocks where you live, which edition makes sense, and whether the PS5 Pro is worth chasing. Everything below is current as of October 27, and we flag clearly what Rockstar has confirmed versus what is still an estimate or a leak.

GTA 6 File Size: How Many GB You Need

Rockstar hasn't announced an official download size. As of October 27, neither the PlayStation Store nor the Microsoft Store lists one either. Sizes usually show up on store pages close to the preload window, so until then the best you can do is read the indirect evidence.

Several figures are circulating online:

  • "Over 200 GB": according to the fan account GTA 6 Info, CyberLeek claims this is the size of the game's development build. The figure is unconfirmed, and development builds can contain tools and extra assets that won't be included in the final release.
  • 244.86 GB: this comes from a screenshot posted on Reddit. Nobody can say which console or build it shows, and it hasn't been confirmed.
  • 676.7 GB: fake. The image first appeared in December 2025, a parody account pushed it again in summer 2026, and it literally says "Install on your home Xbox One", a console GTA 6 isn't coming to.

How much space to free up for GTA 6

For context, GTA 5 was about 87 GB on PS5 when that version launched in 2022. Rockstar says Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map and far denser with enterable interiors, so by our estimate the base install will take 150–200 GB. Add headroom for a day-one patch, whose size also hasn't been announced, and 200–250 GB of free space should keep you safe.

Two storage details people tend to miss:

  • PS5 games can sit on an external USB drive, but they only run from the internal SSD or an installed M.2 drive. Xbox Series X/S works the same way: internal storage or an official expansion card.
  • Xbox Series S owners with the 512 GB model have it worst: only about 364 GB is usable out of the box, so expect to delete a couple of big games to make room.

GTA 6 Preload: Date and How to Preload on PS5 and Xbox

The GTA 6 preload begins on November 12, 2026, exactly one week before launch. That date comes straight from Take-Two's pre-order press release, and the PlayStation Store listing carries a "7-Day Pre-load" tag. Rockstar hasn't given a start time.

How to preload GTA 6 on each version:

  • PS5 digital pre-order: the game is already in your library. With automatic downloads switched on, the console grabs it on its own. Otherwise, start the download manually from the game's page.
  • Xbox digital pre-order: find the game under My games & apps or on its Microsoft Store page, where an install button will appear.
  • Physical copy: there's no disc in the box, just a download code, which Rockstar has confirmed. Boxed copies go on sale on November 12 so buyers can redeem the code and preload alongside everyone else.

Preloading doesn't let you play early. The files stay locked on your drive until the release time hits in your store region.

GTA 6 Release Time: When It Unlocks in Your Time Zone

GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026. Rockstar hasn't officially announced unlock times, but PlayStation Store listings show the game unlocking at midnight local time in each region. That creates a rolling launch about 19 hours long: New Zealand goes first, Mexico and Central America go last.

The US is the notable exception to "local midnight": the whole country unlocks at midnight Eastern, so West Coast players get in on Wednesday evening. On PS5, what matters is the region of your PSN account, not your physical location, and an existing account's region can't be changed.

What time GTA 6 unlocks around the world

What time GTA 6 comes out, based on PS Store data from September (times may still shift before launch):

  • US Eastern (ET): 12 AM, November 19;
  • US Central (CT): 11 PM, November 18;
  • US Mountain (MT): 10 PM, November 18;
  • US Pacific (PT): 9 PM, November 18;
  • Canada: midnight Eastern, same as the US;
  • UK and Ireland (GMT): 12 AM, November 19;
  • Central Europe (CET): 12 AM local, November 19 (11 PM UTC, November 18);
  • Japan and South Korea: 12 AM local, November 19 (3 PM UTC, November 18);
  • Australia (Sydney, AEDT): 12 AM local, November 19 (1 PM UTC, November 18);
  • New Zealand (NZDT): 12 AM local, November 19 (11 AM UTC, November 18), the first region in the world;
  • India: 12 AM local, November 19 (6:30 PM UTC, November 18);
  • Brazil and Argentina: 12 AM local, November 19 (3 AM UTC);
  • Mexico and Central America: 12 AM local, November 19 (6 AM UTC), the last to unlock.

Microsoft hasn't published a region-by-region schedule for Xbox. Players widely expect the Xbox version to follow the console's time zone setting, which is where the "switch to New Zealand to play early" trick comes from, but neither Microsoft nor Rockstar has confirmed it works. On PS5, the same trick would require a separate New Zealand account with the game bought on it.

GTA 6 Editions: Standard vs Ultimate

GTA 6 comes in two editions, with no Deluxe tier in between:

  • Standard Edition: $79.99 (£69.99 in the UK, €79.99 in the eurozone). The full story game.
  • Ultimate Edition: $99.99 (€99.99). Adds premium vehicles, weapons, outfits and businesses that unlock as Jason and Lucia's story progresses, including a 1995 Grotti Cheetah, personal pistols for both leads and the Rideout Customs garage.

The pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack, comes with both editions: a 1955 Vapid Stanier with a garage, vintage outfits and hairstyles, and weapon finishes. Anyone who buys before November 20 gets it, so launch-day purchases count too. Digital pre-orders also include one month of GTA+. There's also something called The Vice City Collection, but that's a merch bundle and doesn't include the game.

Which one should you buy? If you plan to play through the story once and don't care about collector cars, Standard is enough: same game, same pre-order bonus. Ultimate earns its extra $20 if you already expect to sink a hundred hours into Leonida and want the exclusive rides from the start. Plenty of players have made up their minds: Take-Two says pre-orders are skewing toward Ultimate, and Sensor Tower estimated in August that 89% of pre-orders were for the Ultimate Edition. For an item-by-item rundown, see our GTA 6 pre-order guide.

GTA 6 on PS5 vs PS5 Pro: What's the Difference?

Official details are thin. Since the first day of pre-orders, the PlayStation Store has listed GTA 6 as "PS5 Pro Enhanced", so the Pro is definitely getting dedicated work. Whether that means higher resolution, better ray tracing or a steadier frame rate, neither Rockstar nor Sony has said.

Here's what we know so far:

  • Official footage was captured on PS5. Rockstar states the Extended Look and the October 15 launch trailer were recorded on PlayStation 5. Digital Foundry believes that means a base PS5, not a Pro.
  • 60 fps is unconfirmed. Digital Foundry's analysis of the footage pointed to roughly 1440p at a stable 30 fps on base PS5. The widely shared "30 fps for now" line attributed to Rockstar North's Rob Nelson came via a YouTuber's retelling, not a studio statement.
  • The Pro's CPU is barely faster. The PS5 Pro has a much stronger GPU, but its processor is only slightly quicker than the base console's. That's why Digital Foundry expects the extra power to go into image quality rather than doubling the frame rate. That's an informed estimate, not a fact.

What we know about the GTA 6 versions

Our take: if you already own a PS5, don't upgrade to a Pro sight unseen just for GTA 6. Wait for the technical breakdowns after launch. The Pro is also hard to find right now. It costs $899.99 at full price in the US, and used units have been listed for more than new ones. We covered the shortage in our piece on the GTA 6 marketing campaign. If you don't have a console yet and the budget allows, the Pro is the more future-proof pick: the Enhanced badge guarantees some improvements, we just don't know how big they are. Its 2 TB SSD also takes the storage worry off the table.

What about Xbox and PC?

GTA 6 launches on both Xbox Series X and Series S. Digital Foundry expects Series X to land close to PS5, while Series S, with less memory (10 GB versus 16 GB on Series X), could run at around 720p. Digital Foundry made that estimate back in 2024, and Rockstar hasn't given resolution targets for either Xbox. Bloomberg reported that PlayStation is the game's marketing partner: the launch trailer opens with the PlayStation logo, and the game's site says it plays best on PS5.

There's no PC version at launch, and Rockstar hasn't announced a date. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that "historically Rockstar's gone to console first", though he has since hinted that the PC wait may not stretch on for years. Past ports took a year or more: GTA 5 reached PC about a year and a half after its console debut, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took about a year.

However, GamesBeat reports that GTA 6 could reach PC as early as the first quarter of 2027, between January and March. The report cites four anonymous sources familiar with the studio's plans. Rockstar has not confirmed that release window. For the older PC rumors and background, see our guide Everything You Need to Know About GTA 6.

GTA 6 Map and Characters: What Rockstar Has Shown

GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar's take on Florida, with Vice City standing in for Miami. Rockstar has officially named six regions:

  • Vice City: the neon-lit metropolis of beaches, yachts and nightclubs;
  • Leonida Keys: the island chain in the south, modeled on the Florida Keys;
  • Grassrivers: Everglades-style wetlands;
  • Port Gellhorn: a run-down resort town;
  • Ambrosia: an industrial area built around a sugar refinery, with a local biker gang;
  • Mount Kalaga: a national park up north.

According to Rockstar's leads, Leonida is the studio's biggest map yet: about twice the size of GTA 5's and three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2. Density matters more than size here, with far more enterable buildings and interiors, and Game Informer reported over 170 animal species. We pulled the highlights together in our breakdown of GTA 6 in Game Informer.

There are two protagonists. Lucia Caminos is fresh out of prison (the launch trailer shows an ankle monitor on her), and Jason Duval works for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Fans have compared their story to Bonnie and Clyde since the very first trailer, and you'll play as both: Rockstar says you can take them on separately or together. The officially revealed supporting cast includes Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, rap duo Real Dimez, bank robber Raul Bautista and veteran drug runner Brian Heder.

CyberLeek's August leaks included an image presented as the full Leonida map. Rockstar hasn't confirmed it's genuine, and the final game may differ. FAQ

Quick answers to the questions players ask most before GTA 6 launches.

How big is GTA 6 on PS5?

There's no official number yet. By our estimate, clearing 200–250 GB on your console's internal SSD is a safe bet, and the exact size should appear on store pages around November 12.

When can I preload GTA 6?

From November 12, 2026, one week before launch. Preloading works with digital pre-orders and with the download code from the physical edition.

Can I play GTA 6 early?

Only by the hours, not days. According to PlayStation Store listings, New Zealand unlocks first, about 19 hours before Mexico. On PS5, the unlock follows your account's region; on Xbox, the console time zone trick is unconfirmed.

Does GTA 6 have online at launch?

Rockstar hasn't announced an online mode for launch. The ESRB rating also lacks the "Users Interact" notice that online games usually carry, so expect the launch to be about the story campaign.

Is GTA 6 coming to PS4 or Xbox One?

No. GTA 6 is only coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Not at launch. Take-Two hasn't announced a PC version or a date. If Rockstar follows its past pattern, a port is unlikely to arrive less than a year after the console release. Still, rumors circulating online point to the first half of 2027.

Which edition are you getting, and which console will you play on? Let us know in the comments.
