GTA 6 is only weeks away. A giant "Welcome to Vice City" sign has already been installed on the roof of the Miami Heat's arena. Under an agreement with Miami-Dade County, Rockstar is set to pay $975,000 for it.

And that's only part of the campaign: Rockstar is taking its marketing beyond gaming sites: into city streets, onto Netflix and into the NBA. Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro has vanished from major stores in the US and Europe. GameStop has priced used units above new ones, and in Japan, Sony's own store is selling the console only by application and lottery. Nobody has measured how much of the shortage is due to the game.

Consoles have also gotten more expensive: Sony and Microsoft both raised prices in 2026, so a day-one GTA 6 setup now costs more than it would have a year ago.

We look at how Rockstar is promoting GTA 6, what we know about its marketing costs, and whether there's evidence linking the PS5 Pro shortage to demand for the game. We also break down the cost of buying a console with GTA 6 in the US, UK, and eurozone, and cover the events scheduled before launch.

Key Takeaways

  • On September 22, a "Welcome to Vice City" sign went up on the roof of the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat, and on November 18, the day before launch, the Heat will play the Milwaukee Bucks as "Vice City."
  • GTA 6's big gameplay showcase premiered on Netflix before YouTube and drew 31.1 million views in four days, by Netflix's count.
  • There's no way to confirm that this is the most expensive marketing campaign in gaming history: Take-Two, which owns Rockstar, doesn't disclose what it spends on marketing GTA 6.
  • On October 6, GameStop raised its price for a used PS5 Pro to $1,400, compared with $900 for a new one; it had neither in stock. According to the German site Playfront, Sony blames the shortage on supply constraints and high demand. GTA 6 itself doesn't need a Pro: a standard PS5 is enough.
  • As of October 6, the cheapest way to play GTA 6 in the US at official prices was an Xbox Series S plus the game, for about $580 before tax. A PS5 Pro plus the game came to about $980.

The $975,000 Sign: How Miami Is Turning Into Vice City

On September 22, a helicopter hovered over the Miami waterfront, lifting the pink-and-white letters of "Welcome to Vice City" piece by piece onto the roof of the Kaseya Center, where the Heat play. The heaviest sections weighed nearly 5,000 pounds (about 2.2 metric tons), and the roughly 4,700-square-foot sign needed about 21,000 pounds (about 9.5 metric tons) of steel to support it. Fans followed the installation for days. The sign was first lit up on October 1 and is visible from planes approaching Miami International Airport. GTA 6's Vice City is modeled on Miami, and in the game, the arena's counterpart is called the Sahara Arena.

Miami-Dade County owns the arena, so the money goes to the county. The $975,000 covers a temporary sign. It's neither a roof lease nor a naming-rights deal: the building is still the Kaseya Center. According to Forbes, the sign stays up until the Heat's last home game of the 2026–27 season, on April 11, 2027, and documents seen by IGN suggest it could stay even longer.

The exact amount matters. In Miami-Dade, deals over $1 million need a vote by the county commission, and this one came in $25,000 under that threshold. So Mayor Daniella Levine Cava signed it herself on September 10. The commission was formally notified of the deal around 1:30 a.m. on September 18, during budget hearings, although some commissioners had already read about it in the Miami Herald. Commissioner Oliver Gilbert III objected to the process itself, arguing that any Rockstar deal could avoid a vote by being split into pieces under $1 million. The mayor's office defends the deal, calling GTA 6 "the biggest cultural phenomenon of the year." Levine Cava wants to spend the money on a park on county-owned land next to the arena.

In early September, the county had discussed much bolder ideas: temporarily renaming the airport "Vice City Airport," putting the Vice City logo on manhole covers and covering downtown Metromover cars in game branding. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and one county commissioner opposed them. "Miami-Dade County is not Vice City," their joint statement said, and the sheriff called GTA "a video game franchise built around criminal activity." The airport kept its name. On October 5, the sheriff's office clarified that its objections were about public infrastructure such as transit and the airport, not decisions by private businesses such as the Heat.

The arena is only the start. According to the Miami Herald, the City of Miami and Miami Beach have both signed marketing deals with Rockstar too. From October 15 to December 31, the City of Miami will allow banners of up to 10,000 square feet (about 930 square meters) downtown, with a $208,000 fee for each banner larger than 5,000 square feet. In Miami Beach, the "Vice City" logo may appear on a private operator's beach chairs and umbrellas, but not on lifeguard towers. Miami Beach expects at least $3 million, and Commissioner Tanya Bhatt put the figure closer to $4 million.

A Netflix Premiere and an NBA Game in Vice City Colors

This spring, Rockstar seemed to be in no hurry: in April, TheGamer pointed out that GTA 5 had gotten far more marketing at the same point, seven months before its launch. The campaign began in earnest on August 27, and Rockstar started not with gaming sites but with Netflix.

That day, "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET and didn't appear on YouTube until six hours later. The video runs close to 27 minutes and, according to Rockstar, was captured entirely in-game on PS5. Netflix called it a "first-of-its-kind premiere." Everything shown in the video is covered in our Extended Look breakdown.

In four days, the showcase drew 31.1 million views on Netflix, topped the week's global English-language film chart and reached No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks. That doesn't mean 31 million people: Netflix takes the total hours watched and divides them by the video's runtime. On Rockstar's YouTube channel, the video had 30.4 million views as of October 6. According to streaming analytics firm Streams Charts, streamers who watched the premiere live with their audiences drew a combined peak of nearly 4 million concurrent viewers, more than this year's Summer Game Fest. Some Netflix viewers got an error message when the premiere started, though Netflix never confirmed an outage.

GTA 6's 24-hour trailer record, though, has already been broken. The game's first trailer drew more than 90 million YouTube views in 24 hours in December 2023, setting a Guinness World Record. According to Rockstar, the second trailer hit 475 million views across all platforms on its first day, in May 2025. But in March 2026, the trailer for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" drew 718.6 million views in 24 hours, according to Sony Pictures, more than either GTA 6 trailer.

Nobody has said who paid whom for the premiere, or how much. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called it an example of Rockstar "trying new things."

The second big partner is an NBA team: the Miami Heat. On October 2, the Miami Heat and Rockstar announced "A Night in Vice City." On November 18, the day before launch, the Heat will play the Milwaukee Bucks as "Vice City" in never-before-worn uniforms on a custom court, and ESPN will air the game nationally. As of October 6, the uniforms and court hadn't been revealed, but the team store was already selling "Vice City" apparel starting at $45. The Heat call the partnership "historic."

A Brooklyn Mural, a Banner Outside Paris and Spotify Billboards

Miami is the center of the campaign, but it's not the only city where GTA 6 ads have gone up.

A massive mural featuring Jason and Lucia has been completed on the side of a building in Brooklyn, New York. The first photos appeared on Reddit in early October, and images of the finished work are now circulating online. The mural was painted by Colossal Media, which has worked with Rockstar since GTA: San Andreas. The location has a history with the series: in 2013, a GTA 5 mural featuring Trevor was painted on the same corner.

On October 6, crews started putting up a giant GTA 6 banner on one of the Les Mercuriales towers at Porte de Bagnolet, visible from the Paris ring road (technically, the towers are in the suburb of Bagnolet, not Paris itself). French news outlets and social media users spread the claim that the banner was "175 meters tall" (about 574 feet), but that's the height of the taller of the two towers, antenna included. The towers' roofs are 122 meters (about 400 feet) high, so the banner must be shorter. Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed the banner.

Brand partners have joined in, too:

  • In mid-September, Spotify put up GTA 6 billboards in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. Around the same time, Travis Scott, Future, Metro Boomin and other artists posted artwork in the game's style.
  • On September 17, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, 34 new tracks produced with Atlantic Records, out on launch day.
  • At the Tokyo Game Show, PlayStation set up a GTA 6 screening room at its booth, with a 300-inch screen and a vibrating floor.
  • Rockstar is even selling an official collector's set with Oakley sunglasses and a New Era cap.

Rockstar itself has said very little. As of October 6, its newswire hadn't mentioned the sign, the mural or the banner outside Paris, and its only public statement about Miami was the joint announcement with the Heat. The viral photos of a "GTA 6 ad in Times Square" are old: that billboard, from May 2025, was part of a YouTube promotion, not Rockstar's campaign.

Publishers Move Their Games, and Players Take Time Off

GTA 6 has been a punchline for years: the meme "We got X before GTA 6" has been circulating on social media since 2023. Now athletes and TV comedians are making the jokes too. Houston Rockets center Steven Adams joked at media day that every sports league would "plummet" in November. And on October 3, a Saturday Night Live Weekend Update sketch featured cast members playing Jason from GTA 6 and Link from the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Colin Jost joked that every other game had moved out of November to avoid competing with GTA 6, except one.

That one exception is the Ocarina of Time remake, which Nintendo is releasing for Switch 2 on November 5, two weeks before GTA 6. Many big publishers do seem to be avoiding the weeks around November 19.

Xbox even named GTA 6 when it delayed one of its own games. On May 29, Microsoft moved Fable from fall 2026 to February 2027. Xbox's announcement listed GTA 6 among the year's big releases and said the move was part of planning its game launches through the holiday season. As Kotaku noted, all of the 2026 release dates announced at June's State of Play fell between mid-August and mid-October, and some games moved to 2027.

Not everyone is staying away. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23, and, asked about the pressure of competing with GTA 6, Infinity Ward co-studio head Mark Grigsby said, "Afraid of it? No," adding that "it's a little head-to-head, that's great." Devolver Digital is deliberately launching its indie game Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed on November 19, the same day as GTA 6. After every GTA 6 delay, the publisher has posted the same joke: "You can't escape us."

VGTimes art: getting ready for GTA 6 launch day
VGTimes art: getting ready for GTA 6 launch day

People are preparing in their own ways. Burger Motorsports, a California car-tuning company, will close on November 19 because too many employees asked for the day off. An Army engineer battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, offered soldiers who reenlisted a four-day pass for the launch, and by mid-August, 20 of the 130 eligible soldiers had signed up. Guilherme Stefano, a government worker in Brazil, told The Wall Street Journal he's taking 10 days off for the launch; for Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, he took 20.

HR platform BambooHR counted 9% to 17% more time-off requests for November 19 than for a typical third Thursday of November, though the company noted that the game may not be the only reason. Zelnick himself joked back in April that "a lot of people will be calling in sick on November 19."

The widely shared claim that "GTA 6 will cost the US economy $1 billion in lost productivity" is unsupported. The post that spread it doesn't name the economists behind it, and redoing its own math gives less than half that figure.

Rated M: The ESRB Rating and a PEGI Listing That Disappeared

In the US, the ESRB rated GTA 6 M (Mature 17+), citing blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language and use of drugs and alcohol.

And on October 2, a PEGI 18 listing for GTA 6 appeared on the website of Europe's age rating system, citing "strong graphic violence, strong sexual themes and use of illegal drugs." The description specifically mentioned that the player can carry cocaine. That same evening, the entire listing was taken down, and as of October 6, a search for GTA 6 on PEGI's site returned nothing. A rumor spread that only the line about cocaine had been cut, but the whole listing is gone. Neither PEGI nor Rockstar has explained why.

The Most Expensive Campaign Ever? What We Actually Know About the Money

GTA 6's campaign is often called the most expensive in gaming history. There's no way to check that: neither Take-Two nor any named analyst has said what GTA 6's marketing costs.

Take-Two's own reports don't help. The company reports selling and marketing expenses only for the company as a whole, with every game in one number: from April through June 2026, that came to $369.7 million, down from $409.2 million a year earlier, according to its earnings release. Most of the GTA 6 campaign runs from August to November, but even in later reports, its cost will most likely be part of that single number. In May, Zelnick promised "a very significant broad-based marketing campaign" and noted that, unlike with GTA 5, "we won't be buying a lot of network television."

Only one amount Rockstar has agreed to pay has surfaced in official documents: the $975,000 for the arena sign. The "$4 million" figure going around online as Rockstar's Miami ad spending is actually a Miami Beach commissioner's upper estimate for the beach campaign alone. It has nothing to do with the arena sign or the downtown banners.

There's no reliable benchmark, either. In February 2013, before GTA 5 came out, a Sterne Agee analyst estimated its marketing spending at $69 million to $109 million. Scopely, the publisher of the mobile game Monopoly Go!, told Bloomberg it had spent more than $1 billion on marketing, though that was over the nearly two years after the game's April 2023 launch, not on a single launch campaign. It's fair to call this one of the biggest and most visible campaigns in gaming history, but there's no basis for calling it the most expensive.

Above all, a big campaign doesn't automatically mean big sales. In August, Zelnick called the level of pre-orders "unprecedented and astonishing," but admitted that Take-Two didn't really know how that would translate into sales. GTA 6 does matter for game revenue: by analytics firm Newzoo's estimate, console game revenue would fall this year without it. But that's about spending on games, not console sales.

PS5 Pro Sold Out: Empty Shelves, $1,400 Used Units and a Lottery in Japan

GTA 6 launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and a standard PS5 is enough to play it. Neither Sony nor Microsoft offered a console bundle with GTA 6. Still, it's the PS5 Pro that's hard to find at its official price right now.

On October 6, GameStop raised its price for a used PS5 Pro to $1,400, or about $1,500 with a disc drive attached. A new one costs $900, but GameStop had neither new nor used units in stock.

VGTimes art: empty shelves where the PS5 Pro should be

First, consoles got more expensive. Here's the PS5 Pro's US price so far:

  • At launch in 2024: $699.99.
  • From August 2025: $749.99.
  • Since April 2, 2026: $899.99.

The standard PS5 now costs $649.99 and the PS5 Digital Edition $599.99. Sony blamed "continued pressures in the global economic landscape." It was the second PS5 price hike in less than a year (more on that in our rundown of every Sony failure of 2026). Xbox prices went up too, on August 1, 2026: the Series X is now $799.99, and the Series S starts at $499.99.

Then the PS5 Pro disappeared from shelves. On August 29–30, two to three days after the Netflix premiere, it sold out at major US chains Best Buy, Target and Walmart, and then at Sony's own PlayStation Direct store. Third-party sellers on Amazon and Walmart listed it for around $1,300 at the time, and units on eBay were selling for up to $1,200. In early October, the PS5 Pro was still unavailable on PlayStation Direct in the US, UK, Germany and France, even though standard PS5s were in stock. In Germany, by mid-September, some sellers were asking up to €1,400, compared with the official €899.99.

In Japan, you can't simply buy a PS5 Pro from Sony's own store. It's sold by lottery, and only players with at least 60 hours of combined PS4 and PS5 playtime between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026, could apply, with a limit of one console per account. If there are more applications than consoles, winners are drawn at random. Applications closed on October 7, and results start going out around October 26. Standard PS5s are easy to buy in Japan. Sony has set playtime requirements before: 20 hours for the PS VR2 in 2022 and 30 hours for the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro in 2024. It was the press that tied this lottery to GTA 6; Sony's page doesn't mention the game.

Is GTA 6 Behind the Shortage? What the Numbers Say

At first glance, it looks like GTA 6 is emptying store shelves of consoles. The numbers so far are more modest: there was a bump, but a small one.

Some numbers do point to the game helping sell consoles. In the UK, PS5 sales rose 33% and Xbox Series X/S sales 34% week over week after the Netflix premiere, according to analytics firm NielsenIQ, which didn't share unit numbers. Analyst Serkan Toto of Kantan Games expects PlayStation to get most of the new players: "GTA VI will be console only and the vast majority of new users will choose a PlayStation 5," he told Reuters.

Most pre-orders are on PlayStation, too: by Sensor Tower's estimate, 77% of GTA 6 pre-orders were on PS5 as of August 18. The popular claim that PS5 pre-orders are outselling Xbox 6-to-1, however, is based only on purchases made through IGN's affiliate links, not on market-wide figures. Xbox says its share of pre-orders matches its share of the console market.

The US data is less impressive. Analytics firm Circana says PS5 and Xbox sales rose 14% in the week of the premiere compared with the week before. That sounds big, but it works out to fewer than 8,000 extra consoles nationwide. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella noted that GTA 5's impact on PS3 and Xbox 360 sales was "noticeable but not earth shattering" and said he expects the same from GTA 6. Sales were also climbing from a weak starting point: consoles were selling poorly before the premiere. UK console sales for January through July were down 14.4% year over year, and from April through June, Sony shipped 1.6 million PS5s to stores worldwide, compared with 2.5 million a year earlier.

Did GTA 6 sell more consoles? What the sales data shows so far
Did GTA 6 sell more consoles? What the sales data shows so far

Sony hasn't publicly linked the shortage to GTA 6. The German site Playfront has seen a Sony letter to distributors. In it, Sony attributes the PS5 Pro shortage to "temporary market supply constraints and high demand" and expects it to last "through early 2027 at the earliest." The letter itself hasn't been published. Sony also says it has secured enough memory chips to meet its own projected sales for the fiscal year that ends in March 2027.

Two more details complicate the idea that GTA 6 emptied the shelves. In Japan, according to an official Sony dealer, the PS5 Pro has been in short supply since May, three months before the Netflix premiere. And when Microsoft raised Xbox prices on August 1, 2026, it gave a direct reason: console memory and storage now cost more than 2.5 times what they used to.

The upshot: the PS5 Pro really is hard to buy, and the timing lines up with the GTA 6 hype. But there's no way yet to separate how much of the shortage comes from the game and how much from memory costs, supply and the sales volume Sony planned for.

What It Costs to Play GTA 6 on Day One

Piscatella also warned that people buying a console for GTA 6 will face a "price shock." By his count, the average price of a console in the US was about $250 in 2019, and he expects it to top $500 in 2026.

GTA 6 itself costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition in the US. Our GTA 6 pre-order guide covers the differences between editions. There won't be a disc in the box: according to Rockstar, physical copies contain only a download code. They hit stores November 12, the same day digital pre-loading starts.

At official US prices before sales tax, as of October 6:

  • Xbox Series S plus the game: about $580.
  • PS5 Digital Edition plus the game: about $680.
  • Standard PS5 plus the game: about $730.
  • PS5 Pro plus the game: about $980.

Buying a used PS5 Pro at GameStop's $1,400 price instead, when it's in stock, raises the total to roughly $1,480. In the UK, where list prices include VAT, the game costs £69.99, so a standard PS5 plus the game comes to £639.98 and a PS5 Pro plus the game to £859.98. In the eurozone, where VAT is also included, the game costs €79.99: €729.98 with a standard PS5 and €979.98 with a PS5 Pro.

Read also: Why Have Video Games Become So Expensive — and how GTA 6's $80 price will affect the whole industry.

The good news is that GTA 6 doesn't require a PS5 Pro, and you don't need a disc drive either, since the box only holds a code. The game's PlayStation Store page carries a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge, which means the game will get some enhancements on the Pro, but Rockstar hasn't said what they are. Rumors of 60 fps on the Pro haven't been confirmed.

What Happens Before November 19

The loudest part of the campaign is still ahead, and almost every event already has a date:

  • October 15: Giant banners can go up in downtown Miami, and "Vice City" branding may appear on Miami Beach chairs and umbrellas.
  • October 21: The Heat's home opener, where the team plans to start its Vice City promotions.
  • October 23: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches.
  • Early November: Take-Two reports its July–September earnings. The company hasn't announced the date yet.
  • November 5: The Ocarina of Time remake launches.
  • November 12: Digital pre-loading opens, and boxed copies with download codes go on sale.
  • November 18: "A Night in Vice City" at the Heat vs. Bucks game.
  • November 19: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. According to PlayStation Store listings, it unlocks at midnight in each time zone, so players in New Zealand get it first. Rockstar hasn't officially announced unlock times.
VGTimes art: the night before GTA 6 launches

One more date matters to the people who made the game: October 16, when the final employment tribunal hearings in Glasgow, Scotland, end. On October 30, 2025, Rockstar fired 34 employees, 31 of them members of the UK labor union IWGB (Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain). The company says they discussed confidential information in a public forum; the fired developers say the conversation took place in a private union chat and that they were punished for union activity. Even so, they're asking players not to boycott GTA 6.

The Bottom Line

GTA 6 isn't out yet, but you can already see the name of its city from an airplane window. A Netflix premiere, an NBA game played under a fictional city's name, giant letters lifted onto an arena roof by helicopter: Rockstar has taken the game far beyond gaming sites. Take-Two won't say what it all costs.

What does this mean for players?

Getting ready for launch has become expensive, especially if you want a PS5 Pro. GameStop has listed a used PS5 Pro at $500 more than a new one, and in Japan, only players with enough logged playtime can even enter the lottery. A standard PS5 is enough for GTA 6 itself.

In the US, a day-one setup costs anywhere from about $580 to nearly $1,000 at official prices before sales tax, as of October 6.

There's no proof the ads emptied the shelves: an official Sony dealer says the PS5 Pro shortage in Japan began back in May; Playfront reports that Sony blames supply constraints and high demand; and the US sales bump was modest.

What happens after launch?

GTA 5 made $1 billion in three days. Nobody has measured how much of that was the marketing and how much was the game itself, and GTA 6's sales figures alone won't settle that either. The sign on the arena's roof in Miami will stay up until April 2027, and possibly longer. And the "We got X before GTA 6" meme has only a few weeks left: on November 19, it stops making sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions people ask most before GTA 6 launches are about the date, the price and the hardware.

When does GTA 6 come out?

November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. According to PlayStation Store listings, the game unlocks at midnight in each time zone (Rockstar hasn't officially announced unlock times), and pre-loading starts November 12. For everything we know so far, see GTA 6: Everything We Know.

Do you need a PS5 Pro to play GTA 6?

No. The game runs on the standard PS5 and on Xbox Series X/S. Its PlayStation Store page has a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge, so the game will get some enhancements on the Pro, but Rockstar hasn't said what they are. Rumors of 60 fps on the Pro haven't been officially confirmed.

Why is the PS5 Pro sold out?

In late August, right after GTA 6's big showcase, the PS5 Pro sold out at major US retailers and then in Europe. In Japan, according to an official Sony dealer, the shortage began back in May. According to the German site Playfront, which has seen a Sony letter to distributors, Sony blames supply constraints and high demand and expects the shortage to last until at least early 2027. How much of it is due to GTA 6 is unknown.

Will GTA 6 come to PC or PS4?

There won't be a PS4 or Xbox One version. As of October 6, Rockstar hasn't announced a PC version. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 came to PC only after their console launches.

How much does GTA 6 cost?

$79.99 for the Standard Edition in the US, £69.99 in the UK and €79.99 in the eurozone. The pricier editions are covered in our GTA 6 pre-order guide. According to Rockstar, boxed copies contain only a download code, with no disc.

What is GTA 6 rated?

In the US, the ESRB rated it M (Mature 17+) for blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language and use of drugs and alcohol. A PEGI 18 listing briefly appeared in Europe on October 2, citing strong graphic violence, strong sexual themes and use of illegal drugs, before it was removed.

Is the Miami "Welcome to Vice City" sign permanent?

No, it's a temporary sign. According to Forbes, it stays up until the Heat's last home game of the 2026–27 season, on April 11, 2027, and documents seen by IGN suggest it could stay even longer.
