A survival horror about a writer whose novel comes to life and rewrites reality. Alan Wake 2 is one of the best-looking games of its generation and one of the first to require a graphics card with mesh shader support at launch — without them, the game simply wouldn't start. The Northlight engine ray-traces the lighting of the dark forest and the neon nightmares, and in full mode it switches on path tracing that covers everything — direct and indirect light, reflections, shadows, transparency. Black Myth: Wukong

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
An adventure action game from the makers of the recent Wolfenstein titles, in which Indy unravels the mystery of ancient artifacts. This is one of the first major games where hardware ray tracing is mandatory: without an RT-capable card, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle won't even start, which rules out everything older than the RTX 2000 and RX 6000 generations. Hellblade 2 is a benchmark for photorealism on Unreal Engine 5: Nanite holds the geometry of caves and cliffs, Lumen handles the lighting, Senua's face is built in MetaHuman with frame-by-frame facial animation, and the landscapes are captured with photogrammetry. The game is linear, but frame for frame it's one of the most beautiful out there.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
A flight sim where you can take anything into the skies over the real Earth. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 loads your computer differently from everything else in this top: it streams the entire planet from the cloud — with photogrammetry cities, real weather and real traffic — so the load falls on the CPU and your internet connection just as much as on the GPU. As a tech showcase it's a benchmark.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
A historical RPG with no magic and no dragons — medieval Bohemia, the blacksmith Henry, and real 15th-century events. Here the load comes from honest technology and scale rather than from emptiness — and that's what sets the remaster apart from poorly optimized projects.

Crysis Remastered
This is where it all started. Crysis came out in 2007 and became the very benchmark that turned "but can it run it?" into a meme: a tropical island with destructible vegetation, physics and (for the time) advanced lighting floored any PC for years. Crysis Remastered updated the picture for modern systems and added ray tracing, but it kept the engine's signature flaw — it parallelizes poorly across cores, so it bottlenecks the CPU even on top-tier hardware. The original holds 91 on Metacritic.
What PC you need: a powerful CPU with strong single cores and a top-tier graphics card.
Demanding ≠ broken
It is worth drawing an important line separately: not every game that runs poorly on a powerful PC automatically belongs in this list. Forspoken, for example, dropped frames even on top-tier graphics cards with ray tracing disabled, while offering neither comparable visuals nor a particularly dense open world. Monster Hunter Wilds long suffered from low frame rates, slow texture streaming, and artifacts when upscaling was enabled. Dragon's Dogma 2 hit CPU limits in cities packed with NPCs and still dipped even on strong systems, despite graphics that were far from record-breaking.
These projects can also be “heavy,” but that is a different kind of heaviness: not the result of expensive technology, but of questionable optimization. For the main list, we included games where the load at least makes sense — ray tracing, complex lighting, detailed geometry, world scale, simulation, or data streaming.
On the horizon: GTA 6
GTA 6 cannot be included in a list of demanding PC games yet: it is scheduled for November 19, 2026, and only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch. A PC version has not been announced. Judging by Rockstar's previous releases — GTA 5 came to PC roughly a year and a half after consoles, while Red Dead Redemption 2 took about a year — it is unlikely to arrive before 2027.
Still, the trailers already show why the eventual PC version will almost certainly become a serious hardware test. Vice City and the state of Leonida look like a huge seamless world with dense city traffic, crowds of NPCs, beaches, swamps, water, weather, and dynamic street scenes. That kind of world should put pressure not only on the graphics card, but also on the CPU, memory, and SSD: the engine will have to keep large numbers of characters, vehicles, reflections, animations, and streamed data in play at once.
