Not every gamer enjoys facing horror games alone. That’s why co-op horror has become a fairly popular genre with plenty of compelling titles. In this article, we’ve gathered some of the most notable creepy games of recent years that you can enjoy together with friends.

GTFO

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

The first game on our list tells the story of faceless prisoners who, at the very beginning of their journey, see a serene sky and are then punished for their misdeeds by being sent into a deep abyss. The game features several locations, each dark and full of horrors. The monsters are nearly blind but have excellent hearing, which pushes players toward a stealthy approach. The oppressive atmosphere, the need to be quiet like a ninja, and tightly coordinated teamwork all create a level of tension that makes GTFO extremely hard to put down.

The tension spikes during action segments, when you must quickly set up turrets, scatter mines, defend doors from incoming waves, and finally sprint with everything you’ve got toward the extraction point.

FOREWARNED

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements

In FOREWARNED, players take on the roles of archaeologists exploring ancient Egyptian ruins, unaware of the nightmares awaiting them. An ancient evil has awakened and hungers for human souls. The task is to stop these powerful supernatural entities from escaping and triggering an apocalypse.

The game uses procedural level generation, meaning each new session brings something fresh as you explore. There is also VR support for deeper immersion.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online and local).
System Requirements

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is the third chapter in Supermassive Games’ co-op horror anthology. This entry is set in Iraq in 2003.

The main characters are a small squad of American soldiers accompanied by CIA officer Rachel King and Iraqi sergeant Salim Othman. During a clash between opposing forces, an earthquake strikes, plunging everyone underground — where their terrifying journey begins.

All the signature gameplay elements return: a branching narrative, QTEs that determine the fate of your character and their allies, and a persistent sense of the unknown. The chapter isn’t exactly bone-chilling, but it will manage to scare you a few times.

The Quarry

  • Year: 2022;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online and local).
System Requirements
Buy

Another Supermassive Games project made it into this list — also an interactive horror movie. This is The Quarry, which supports local co-op for up to eight players, allowing each person to control a specific character and follow their individual storyline.

The plot unfolds at Hackett’s Quarry summer camp, where one night the counselors decide to throw a party. Things quickly spiral out of control, thrusting the characters into terrifying situations that threaten their lives.

Almost any character can die. As in previous releases, everything depends on player choices and actions. This means the game features multiple endings, some of which are quite unexpected.

Lunch Lady

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

A co-op horror game about school kids. It supports both solo play and co-op for up to four players.

The story of Lunch Lady follows a group of teenagers who, with final exams approaching, decide to steal the test answers from school materials. But things are not that simple: it turns out that the school is ruled at night by the Lunch Lady, and pulling off the plan quickly is impossible.

Players must find ten pages with test answers and keys to locked doors. Finally, they must escape the school without being caught by the patrolling lady. She is immortal, so you can only hide from her — as well as from the kitchen tools and axes she throws at your back.

Devour

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

A game about cultists whose goal is to perform a ritual and banish a malevolent entity, with each match’s intro explaining the backstory.

The objectives across Devour maps follow a similar pattern: find the required number of ritual items (or animals), desecrate or purify them at specific locations, and destroy them. This means players will be chasing goats, gathering eggs and keys, and running from possessed enemies, spiders, ghosts, and a roaming monster. A UV flashlight helps fend off regular mobs, but against the boss it only slows them down — and becomes useless in the later phases.

The game also includes various perks you can equip before each match — not all are helpful, but some are quite valuable. There’s also a nightmare difficulty where even your flashlight is taken away. For the boldest players, a single-player mode is available.

Hellcoming

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

The goal in Hellcoming (up to four players) is to banish a demon by destroying the special artifact tying it to our world. The task isn’t simple: the artifact lies on an altar inside the demon’s lair, which can only be reached through a portal. The lair is protected by magical seals and corrupt energy — cleansing these is the first step. The locations are large, and the demon is highly active, as is the constant stream of lesser creatures spawning to stop you from saving the world.

Players have access to various helpful tools: a vacuum cleaner capable of absorbing any liquid, a detector that locates demonic entities, and a brush for cleaning all kinds of filth. Difficulty gradually ramps up alongside the number of monsters eager to tear you apart.

In Silence

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

An asymmetric first-person multiplayer horror game released in 2021 after a year of early access. At first glance, the gameplay seems familiar: a group of five players must find parts and repair a car to escape the monster, or solve a simple puzzle to obtain a weapon and start hunting it instead. After death, a character doesn’t leave the map but becomes a mouse — yes, a mouse — helping teammates locate useful items.

The core mechanic of In Silence is reflected in the title: you must avoid making any sound. The monster has terrible eyesight but superb hearing and reacts to every noise, so constant chatter with teammates isn’t an option. If it grabs your character, a flashlight burst can free you — provided you saved enough battery.

There is also a harder mode with minimal key items on the map, plus a single-player option where the monster is controlled by AI.

Propnight

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

Propnight is another asymmetric multiplayer horror game. It borrows the core concept of Dead by Daylight: four teenage survivors must repair five generators, avoid the monster, open the gates, and escape.

The game differs from DBD through its brighter color palette (some even compare the style to Fortnite), a fixed escape timer that increases after certain successful actions, and consumable items scattered across the map. But the main feature of Propnight is the ability to transform into various objects to hide from the killer.

Eronoctosis: Put Yourself Together

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: no.
System Requirements
Compare Prices

A free co-op horror game for two players with an unusual visual style. The goal is to piece together a person’s mind by making your way through the labyrinths of a diseased psyche plagued by nightmares.

In Eronoctosis: Put Yourself Together, the roles are split: one character picks up a flashlight and lights the way for the team, revealing hidden monsters; the other carries a camera that can destroy those monsters. Coordination is crucial: the camera can only deal with enemies that have been illuminated. If the creatures get too close, the character dies and the run starts over from the beginning.

The Outlast Trials

  • Year: 2023;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

The famous Outlast horror series has returned, and this time it is built around co-op play. Up to four players can join a session, each controlling a test subject. The main objective is to survive the trials prepared for them by the scientists.

The story of The Outlast Trials revolves around test subjects undergoing horrific experiments in a secret facility during the Cold War. To stay alive, the characters must face living nightmares and deranged inmates.

Ghost Watchers

  • Year: 2022;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

For those who love ghost-themed horror, the indie team at Renderise created Ghost Watchers, a horror game where players explore abandoned houses in search of the supernatural.

As you investigate locations, you must interact with various objects to determine the type of ghost, as well as its age and mood. Spirits are split into several categories, ranging from former suicides to full-fledged demons.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements

Not particularly scary, but tense and, most importantly, an engaging game set in the Alien universe.

In Aliens: Fireteam Elite, a squad of marines fights its way through levels while fending off all sorts of xenomorph variants. The soldiers must act quickly and in sync, and they need to make smart use of their weapons and gear. The available arsenal and gadgets depend on the chosen class and define each marine’s role in the squad: scouts deploy drones that highlight enemy silhouettes, while technicians specialize in defensive turrets.

The atmosphere of Aliens: Fireteam Elite also deserves special mention: weapon sounds, the visual design of the Xenomorphs, gear, and environments are taken straight from the film series, making the project feel highly authentic to the source material — which fans will appreciate.

Back 4 Blood

  • Year: 2021;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

A co-op shooter from Turtle Rock Studios, a team founded by many of the developers behind Left 4 Dead. Unsurprisingly, Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor to that cult classic. The core idea remains the same: move through the level, mow down regular and special infected, and deal with threats dynamically thrown at you by the AI director.

Back 4 Blood is an interesting game, though it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor. It lacks the same charisma, and the developers overloaded the formula with unnecessary systems and grind. That said, if you’ve had your fill of Left 4 Dead, this is far from the worst alternative.

Demonologist

  • Year: 2023;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

One of the most successful imitators of the wildly popular Phasmophobia. Demonologist almost completely mirrors its structure, many of its mechanics, and even its core concept. Players head into an abandoned house where a malevolent spirit has taken up residence. Using special equipment, they must gather clues to identify the exact type of ghost.

The key difference in Demonologist is that once the investigation is complete, you can keep playing, tackle additional challenges, and even attempt an exorcism ritual — a mechanic that doesn’t exist in Phasmophobia at all. On top of that, Demonologist is arguably even scarier than its main rival, which is impressive considering Phasmophobia is already not for the faint of heart.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

  • Year: 2023;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

An asymmetric multiplayer horror game based on the famous film series, with gameplay reminiscent of Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th: The Game, but with a few important twists. First, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre puts a strong emphasis on realism: believable character animations, no mysticism, and a grounded setting. Second, the survivors aren’t running from a single killer but from several, which dramatically changes the game’s dynamics. The killers are certainly dangerous, but they are not as overwhelmingly powerful as in some similar titles, so they also have to coordinate and work as a team.

If you decide to try The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, keep in mind that the developers have stopped supporting the project — there will be no more updates. This means the servers may be shut down in the coming years, so it’s better to grab the game at a steep discount during a sale to avoid disappointment later.

Killing Floor 3

  • Year: 2025;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

Right after launch, Killing Floor 3 drew quite a lot of criticism, but the developers have improved it significantly with updates since then. At this point, it’s a dynamic co-op horror shooter with a wide selection of maps, attractive visuals, satisfying gunplay, and a high level of gore. Still, the game is held back by issues like middling optimization and futuristic weapons that don’t really fit the traditional Killing Floor 3 aesthetic. There are no deal-breaking flaws, but the project still has room to grow.

Lethal Company

  • Year: 2023;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

The phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” perfectly captures the mindset you need when approaching Lethal Company. It’s certainly not the best-looking game out there, but at the same time it’s one of the most frightening co-op experiences you can share with friends.

In Lethal Company, you and your teammates work as scrap collectors dispatched by a corporation to derelict moons. You have to move quickly and responsibly to meet your profit quota on time. The problem is that the most valuable loot is usually hidden inside industrial complexes and facilities — sprawling, maze-like spaces with corridors that often lead nowhere. To make matters worse, these structures are inhabited by various deadly monsters.

Creatures in Lethal Company are split into distinct species with unique behavior patterns. And despite the futuristic setting, you won’t be fighting cyborgs or mutants, but ghosts, creepy animated dolls, and giant insects. These monsters feel more like beings ripped from popular internet creepypasta than generic sci-fi entities.

R.E.P.O.

  • Year: 2024;
  • Platforms: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

One of 2025’s standout indie hits and a worthy rival to games like Phasmophobia and Lethal Company.

In R.E.P.O., a squad of unarmed, comically looking androids heads into abandoned buildings and mansions to retrieve valuable antiques or equipment and carry everything back to the extraction point. Objects follow physics rules and have a durability parameter, so you must be extremely careful while transporting loot to avoid breaking fragile items. Sounds simple? Only on paper: deadly monsters patrolling the level do everything they can to disrupt the process. That’s why you need to stay quiet whenever possible and work as a team for maximum efficiency.

MIMESIS

  • Year: 2024;
  • Platform: PC;
  • Co-op: yes (online).
System Requirements
Compare Prices

The newest Lethal Company clone, released in early access in October of this year. MIMESIS doesn’t radically reinvent the formula, but it does add one key idea: AI mimics as enemies. They imitate player behavior, copy gestures, and even reproduce the voices of people in your group, which can easily confuse teammates and lead to disastrous mistakes.
